The Minnesota Vikings continued to sign their NFL Draft class on Tuesday by agreeing to terms with fourth-round pick Khyree Jackson on a rookie contract. The contract is for four years worth around $4.8 million.
With the signing of Jackson, only the Vikings first-round picks Dallas Turner and J.J. McCarthy remain unsigned. That isn't uncommon for the first-round picks to be ones who remain unsigned, as their contracts are a little bit more complicated that mid and late-round picks.
Why are they more complicated? Contracts of first-round picks are fully guaranteed, which means if they get cut during their contracts, they could be owed the duration of the contract. What teams will try to is put in offset language that allows them to not pay the guarantees remaining if another team is also paying them. If the guaranteed money owed is $5 million and the new team is paying them $2 million, they will get $2 million in credit on the salary cap.
Expect the Vikings to find a way to get the contracts of Turner and McCarthy done sooner rather than later.
