The Minnesota Vikings are continuing to do whatever they can to sign wide receiver Justin Jefferson to a contract extension. If the Vikings want it to be for longer than three years, that took a hit on Tuesday afternoon when the Houston Texans agreed to a three-year extension with wide receiver Nico Collins.
The deal as reported by The Athletic's Diana Russini is for three years and around $24 million. The money is irrelevant to the discussion surrounding Jeferson, as he is likely to receive around $34 million per season. The intriguing part of the contract discussion is the length of the contract.
Wide receivers are continuing to take shorter-term deals since the salary cap is going up. Taking a shorter term deal will allow you to take another bite at the apple.
That is a likely path for Jefferson, as he turns 25 on June 16th. He could theoretically sign another contract extension at the age of 27 which would be his third. That is the benefit of drafting a young player and for those players to enter the draft at a young age. Will it work out that way? Only time will tell, but it will be advantageous to do that for Jefferson.
