The Miami Dolphins have decided to keep Odell Beckham Jr. on the PUP list. That means he will miss the first four games of the NFL season. This is a surprising turn of events given the fact that yesterday Coach Mike McDaniel seemed optimistic that OBJ would not start the season on the PUP list.
The Dolphins have never specified what OBJ's injury is. He had an offseason procedure. The team reportedly knew when he was signed in May it was possible he could start the season on the PUP list. Dolphins fans have been baffled by the addition of OBJ, for an injury that no one knows what it is, only to not have him available to play.
The Dolphins are loaded with wide-receiving talent led by Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle which made the signing of OBJ confusing from the get-go. But there is a window of opportunity right now when he could have played with the injuries the Dolphins' wide receiver room is dealing with.
How does OBJ fit on the roster when he can return? With four games, other wide receivers could make a case for the WR3 job if that was in fact the long-term plan for OBJ. It is a perplexing situation with no solution in sight. Maybe in Week 5, if OBJ is healthy enough to play, it will make more sense.
In the interim, it is worth keeping an eye on emerging star and rookie wide receiver Malik Washington who could cement his role with the team in the early weeks of the season.
