Los Angeles Chargers position preview: Safety depth chart ahead of training camp image

The Los Angeles Chargers have one of the best safeties in the NFL but a bunch of guys looking to make a name for themselves behind him.

Derwin James is a great player. The only thing that has stood in his way during his career has been his health. But he is the leader of this team's secondary and if the team can get another player or two to chip in at a high rate at safety, this defense could be quite good.

With training camp quickly approaching, here is a look at the team's pecking order at the safety position.

Los Angeles Chargers safety depth chart ahead of training camp

1. Derwin James

The 3-time Pro Bowl safety will turn 28 years old in August but still could have plenty of good years in front of him.

2. Alohi Gilman

Drafted in the sixth round in 2020, Alohi Gilman has established himself as a quality piece of the defense and was rewarded with a two-year contract extension this offseason.

3. JT Woods

A third-round pick in 2022, JT Woods' development has been slow. He will need to show something and become a key piece of the defense this year.

4. A.J. Finley

A.J. Finley went undrafted last year but ended up suiting up in 12 games for the Chargers, forcing a fumble in the process. He will be used on special teams mostly but it will be interesting to see if he can offer something on defense.

5. Tony Jefferson

The Chargers brought Tony Jefferson out of a short retirement this offseason but there is no guarantee that he will make this team. How much rust will he have after not playing since 2022?

6. Akeem Dent

If there is going to be an undrafted player from the team's most recent crop that makes the 53-man roster this year, put your money on Akeem Dent

7. Jalyn Phillips

Another undrafted free agent, Jalyn Phillips comes from a winning tradition at Clemson. He will likely be competing for a spot on the practice squad.
