The Los Angeles Chargers are going to look quite different at several positions in 2024, and the tight end spot will be one of those.

After signing free agents Will Dissly and Hayden Hurst this offseason, the Chargers had their top two tight ends after Gerald Everett left in free agency. But in a run-heavy offense led by Greg Roman, the team is likely to keep a couple more.

The team recently signed Tucker Fisk and with the way he blocked against the Los Angeles Rams in the second preseason game, he seemed like he could challenge for a roster spot. But on Thursday, the team signed former BYU tight end Isaac Rex.

Rex went undrafted but signed with the Detroit Lions this offseason. He was released in May and has now been signed by the Chargers with only one preseason game remaining. Though he won't have a lot of time to make an impression, the team sees something in him they like to sign him at this stage.

Isaac Rex was an offensive weapon at BYU

Rex has great size at 6-foot-6 and he had a solid career at BYU where he caught 112 passes for nearly 1,400 yards and an impressive 24 touchdowns.

He now joins a group where five players are likely competing for two spots, assuming that Dissly, Hurst and Donald Parham are all going to be on the roster.

Rex, Fisk, Stone Smartt and undrafted free agents Zach Heins and Luke Benson will be those players. It should be an interesting position to monitor when roster cutdown day arrives.

However, Dissly, Hurst and Fisk have all been held out of practice this week, so this could just be a move to get enough players on the roster for the final game. Rex still has a chance to show something though, even if that chance is small.

To make room for Rex on the 90-man roster, the Chargers released undrafted free agent Micheal Mason, a defensive lineman out of Coastal Carolina.
