The Indianapolis Colts have claimed cornerback Samuel Womack III off waivers, the team announced Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the team waived cornerback Darrell Baker Jr.

Womack was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he appeared in 16 games, logging 146 defensive snaps. Across that limited action, he recorded 19 combined tackles, two passes defended, one interception, and one forced fumble. He also posted a respectable PFF grade of 72.2.

In 2023, Womack suffered an MCL injury just one week into the regular season. He landed on the Reserve/Injured list and was sidelined until Week 11. He ended the season with seven combined tackles in seven games.

This offseason, he found himself as the odd man out on San Francisco’s depth chart.

Womack is listed at 5-foot-10. He has impressive speed, running a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine. At age 25, he is a solid depth option with upside.

He is also an experienced special teams contributor. Over his two seasons with the 49ers, he logged 338 total special teams snaps.

The Colts are moving on from Baker, who went undrafted in 2022. He joined the team’s practice squad, eventually being elevated to the active roster in December 2022.

Over two seasons, he suited up in 17 games for the franchise, posting 35 combined tackles, seven passes defended, and one fumble recovery.
