It's a tough world to be a punter in the NFL.

Former Indianapolis Colts punter Matt Haack was released by the Buffalo Bills on Friday in order to create a spot on the roster for Gable Steveson, an Olympic gold medalist, who will be working on the defensive line.

Haack spent the 2022 season with the Colts after Rigoberto Sanchez tore his Achilles during a training camp practice. During that campaign, he punted 70 times with an average of 44.8 yards per punt. 40% of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line with three of them going for touchbacks.

Steveson, who has never played football before, signed a three-year rookie contract with the Bills, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Steveson measures in at 6-foot-1 and 275 pounds so he will likely need to add some weight as a defensive tackle.

The Bills had three punters on the active roster before cutting Haack so it appears he drew the short straw when it came time to make a corresponding move.
