Sam LaPorta injury update: Tests confirm what Lions TE is dealing with image

The Detroit Lions had quite the scary moment during the 20-13 Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals after budding star tight end Sam LaPorta went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter.

LaPorta was blocking on a touchdown run by running back Jahmyr Gibbs when his ankle got rolled up on by a Cardinals defender. After hobbling to the sideline, LaPorta was taken to the locker room on a cart.

At the time, we obviously thought the worst because the cart has historically been a terrible sign for a player's status. However, LaPorta was able to get back into the game and finished it out, although he did have another brief exit in the second half.

On Monday morning, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler provided the latest update on the Lions tight end, and it's a positive one, all things considered.

Sam LaPorta injury update

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, tests confirm that LaPorta is dealing with a low-ankle sprain, which is good news considering a high-ankle sprain is a multi-week injury that would've forced LaPorta to miss time.

While LaPorta did manage to return to the contest, he was not involved in the game plan much. Prior to his injury, LaPorta was well on his way to having his best game of 2024, as he tallied two catches for 36 yards in the first half.

It remains to be seen if LaPorta will be able to suit up in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks, but the good news is he'll have an extra day to get right with the game being on Monday night.

The Lions will release their first injury report of the week on Thursday as a result of the Monday night game, and the list will likely be lengthy, as LaPorta wasn't the only Lions players to get hurt on Sunday.
