The Detroit Lions haven't gotten off to the start to the season they envisioned, as the team sits with a 1-1 record and has seen its offense struggle. That hasn't had a big impact on wide receiver Jameson Williams, but the same can't be said for tight end Sam LaPorta.
Following his breakout game in Week 1, Williams delivered a decent performance in Week 2. He didn't find the end zone this time, but he had another long reception (50 yards) and finished with five catches for 79 yards and one carry for 15 yards.
Meanwhile, LaPorta actually managed to have a worse showing in Week 2 than he did in Week 1. He was targeted just three times and tallied two receptions for 13 scoreless yards.
Are we going back to the well with Williams facing the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3? Is it time to sit LaPorta after two lackluster showings to begin the season? Keep scrolling to find out.
Fantasy Football Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Sam LaPorta
LaPorta is off to an incredibly disappointing start to the season, ranking as TE16 overall in PPR, per Fantasy Pros. That is certainly not what fantasy owners were expecting when they took him early on in drafts this year.
LaPorta is fourth on the team in targets, trailing wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, and running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Williams in particular has been an issue for LaPorta's looks, as he's proving to be a trusted weapon in the passing attack early on.
But LaPorta is simply too talented for this to continue, and we fully expect him to produce much more, especially as a struggling Jared Goff finds his footing.
You cannot bench LaPorta under any circumstance, even in a matchup against a Cardinals defense that is tied for the eighth-fewest fantasy points per game surrendered to tight ends.
Want a positive? This game has shootout potential, which could lead to a ton of passing production for the Lions' offense.
Verdict: Start 'Em
Fantasy Football Start 'Em, Sit 'Em: Jameson Williams
Williams had another productive outing in Week 2 and is currently second on the team in targets, receptions and receiving yards after two games. He ranks as WR7 overall, which is actually higher than St. Brown (WR25).
While we don't expect him to finish as a top-10 receiver or higher than St. Brown, it's clear that neither scenario is out of the question. Williams is primed to settle in as a WR2, at worst, and is an every-week starting option until further notice.
He also draws a great matchup against an Arizona defense that's tied for the eighth-most fantasy points per game ceded to wide receivers. This game could also be a shootout.
Verdict: Start 'Em
