The Denver Broncos are looking to become more ferocious on defense by finding a consistent pass rush off of the edge. Last season, the team registered 42 sacks, which was tied for 21st in the league. While that is not a horrible number, it's also not good enough.
With several pressing needs in the draft, the Broncos selected Utah edge rusher Jonah Elliss in the third round. The hope will be that he can round out the group and give the team a package of players that get after the quarterback collectively as opposed to having big-name players at the position, such as the Los Angeles Chargers who have Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack.
With training camp underway, here is how the depth chart looks at the edge rusher spot.
Denver Broncos edge rusher depth chart
Starters
Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper
If the Broncos had a game right now, these would likely be the guys who "started" the game, but it is a position that will likely rotate out frequently.
Second-String
Nik Bonitto, Jonah Elliss
The Broncos have used premium draft picks on these two players in recent years so the hope will be that they turn into the top two options on the roster as time goes on.
Third-String
Ronnie Perkins, Thomas Incoom
These two players could easily be battling for one of the final roster spots. Thomas Incoom made the roster as an undrafted player last season but rarely played in the regular season. Ronnie Perkins was drafted in the third round of the 2021 draft by the New England Patriots.
Others
Jaylon Allen, Durell Nchami, Dondrea Tillman
There are some intriguing players here, even if it is the back end of the roster. Jaylon Allen was a name that stood out in the undrafted free-agent process and Dondrea Tillman has played for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, helping them win three spring league championships.
Either of them could push either Perkins or Incoom for a roster spot.
