The Denver Broncos are in the midst of a quarterback competition, one that has faced heavy scrutiny from fans of other teams, some going as far as to say it's the worst quarterback competition in the league.
But it is a competition and it started with Jarrett Stidham, Zach Wilson, and first-round pick Bo Nix. Publicly, head coach Sean Payton is going to say that all three quarterbacks are still in the race, but it has been clear for at least a few days that it's become a two-horse race.
Wilson will look to make his case as a No.3 quarterback or the team can cut him, hope he clears waivers, and then he could be added to the practice squad. But this competition is down to Stidham and Nix.
Bo Nix starting to emerge as Broncos' Week 1 starter
Stidham is going to be Payton's fall-back option. He closed the 2023 season as the starter and he knows the offense well. At the same time, Nix is not going to be on the bench long, if at all.
As Ryan McFadden of The Denver Post details, Nix is slowly pulling ahead in the competition and if that continues, he is going to be the Week 1 starter.
My observations after 10 @broncos Training Camp practices:
— Mike Sanford (@Coach_Sanford2) August 4, 2024
-Defensive Front 7 is incredibly deep and very active.
-Riley Moss & Levi Wallace are the leaders to start opposite PS2.
-Bo Nix is your starting QB.
-OL & RB group are the strength of this Offense.
-Dulcich & Krull…
There could be some risk in that as Nix could be thrust into a rough situation early. But his 61 college starts, the most in NCAA history, are often brought up as a strength. Nix has reportedly looked great in camp and is beginning to get comfortable as a professional quarterback.
It may not start out pretty, but Payton may want his rookie to learn to work his way out of a tough situation, similar to that of a young pitcher facing bases loaded with no outs.
Preseason games should be telling, but it would be surprising if anyone other than Nix is under center for the Broncos at Seattle in Week 1.
