The Chicago Bears appear to have struck gold with No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.
On Tuesday, Williams appeared in Episode 2 of HBO's Hard Knicks: Off-Season, which chronicles the New York Giants.
Williams' cameo in the episode arrived with Giants head coach Brian Daboll (along with his staff) interviewing and assessing Williams ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
In a dramatic moment, Daboll challenged Williams by asking him to draw up a play on a whiteboard. "So let's say this ... you have one play that you can run -- a pass play -- and you have to run that play anytime you want to run a pass in the game," Daboll said. "So if there's 70 plays in a game and there's 45 passes, you have to run this one play every time. You got it in your head? You know the play you want?"
Williams sat in silence for a mere second before perking up and responding, "Yeah, let's do it" and proceeding to map out and explain a detailed play.
When Williams finished, Daboll once again questioned the quarterback about whether or not he's ever thrown off his back shoulder to the third target during the execution of this play.
Williams replied affirmatively, which prompted Daboll to reveal that Brett Favre exhibited a similar ability to throw off his back shoulder during the play in question.
"When I had Favre, we used to run this play a bunch," Daboll said. "Even if it was zone, he would feel that defender, and if he could rifle it in on that inside seam ... he would ... drill it to him."
Daboll likening Williams to Favre is no light statement, with Favre being a three-time NFL MVP, Super Bowl champion, and Hall of Fame quarterback.
The comparison carries even more weight coming from a coach with the status of Daboll, who won AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2022 and has coached in the NFL for over two decades.
Williams has a mighty long way to go before he can be in real -- not theoretical -- comparisons with a player of Favre's caliber, but he can start by taking advantage of the weapons at his disposal in the new-look Bears' receiving corps.
Come September, everyone will begin to see if Williams can live up to the heightened expectations heaped upon him.
