Former TCU head coach Gary Patterson’s time with his former rival has come to an end.
Patterson was hired as a special assistant to Baylor head coach Dave Aranda in February and the school confirmed he’d left the program in a statement to The Athletic.
From Baylor: “Baylor Football and Gary Patterson have jointly concluded their official partnership.Gary joined us as a senior consultant in February, and he has been a tremendous asset to the team, providing valuable insights and expertise. We are truly grateful for everything he has contributed and wish him all the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his storied career.”
Aranda led Baylor to a Big 12 title in 2021 but is on the hot seat after posting back-to-back losing seasons. Patterson went 181-79 in 25 seasons at TCU but was fired eight games into the 2021 season after a 3-5 start. Under Patterson, TCU won titles in three different conferences — Conference USA, the Mountain West and Big 12 — including an undefeated season in 2014.
Patterson spent 2022 as a special assistant for Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian as the Horned Frogs went 13-2 and advanced to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
He spent 25 years at TCU, Baylor’s primary rival, going 181-79 before he was fired in 2021 after a string of underwhelming seasons. After his ouster, he spent the 2022 season as a special assistant to Steve Sarkisian at Texas before moving on to Baylor this year.
