The New York Yankees may get a first-hand look at what they traded away last offseason when they visit the Detroit Tigers this weekend.

In a somewhat ironic twist, the Tigers promoted two prospects from Triple-A ahead of the weekend series in Detroit.

One of them is shortstop Trey Sweeney, a former first-round pick by the Yankees in the 2021 MLB Draft.

The Yankees traded Sweeney to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the offseason in a deal that sent left-hander Victor Gonzalez and infield prospect Jorbit Vivas to New York.

Gonzalez was designated for assignment before the first half of the season was concluded while Vivas remains an intriguing prospect who had a cup of coffee in the big leagues earlier in the season.

After spending half of the season with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, Sweeney was a part of the deadline trade that sent Jack Flaherty to Los Angeles.

Now, the 24-year-old infielder could make his MLB debut against the team that drafted him No. 20 overall.

Holding a career .791 OPS in the minors, Sweeney has been lighting it up in Triple-A Toledo during his short stint with the Tigers' affiliate. Over 11 games and 42 at-bats, Sweeney is hitting .381 with two home runs, nine RBI, six doubles and a 1.114 OPS.

Entering Friday, the Yankees are tied with the Baltimore Orioles at 72-50 for the American League East lead and are a half-game behind the Cleveland Guardians for the best record in MLB.
