The Boston Red Sox's bullpen has been in constant shuffle over the last couple of weeks with players going down with injuries and the team making moves to hopefully improve the group for a run in the postseason.
On Tuesday, Boston designated right-handed reliever Trey Wingenter for assignment, putting the 30-year-old on waivers. If he passed through waivers, he could've been assigned back to Triple-A Worcester. However, he was claimed by the Chicago Cubs.
Wingenter appeared in just two games for the Red Sox after they acquired him from the Detroit Tigers in early July in a trade for pitching prospect CJ Weins. In those two games, he allowed seven runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out three in 2 1/3 innings.
Until Justin Slaten (elbow inflammation) and Chris Martin (elbow inflammation) return from the injured list, Boston's bullpen will include Brennan Bernardino, Cam Booser, Cooper Criswell, Luis Garcia, Kenley Jansen, Zack Kelly, Lucas Sims and Josh Winckowski.
Garcia has made one appearance for the Red Sox since being acquired at the deadline, pitching a clean inning on Friday night against the Texas Rangers. Sims has pitched in two games since the deadline, walking just one batter in his two total innings of work against the Rangers and Seattle Mariners.
