On Sunday night, all 30 MLB teams participated in the first two rounds of the 2024 MLB draft, and after the Boston Red Sox selected Texas A&M outfielder Braden Montgomery in the first round, they used their second-round pick on TCU left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle.
Tolle, 21, began his collegiate career at Wichita State before transferring to TCU for the 2024 season. In three years in college, Tolle made 42 appearances (40 starts) and posted a 4.09 ERA and 1.264 WHIP while striking out 10.5 batters per nine innings.
Tolle was also a solid hitter in college, batting .294 with an .838 OPS, 18 home runs, 81 RBIs and one stolen base in 371 at-bats.
This is the that Boston has selected a pitcher since they took Tanner Houck in the first round of the 2017 draft.
