The Boston Red Sox traveled to Maryland and took on the Baltimore Orioles for the first of four games against the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards on Thursday night, and Alex Cora's squad was handed a 5-1 loss.
Boston's offense struggled mightily against the five arms that Baltimore trotted out throughout this contest. They recorded seven hits on the night and struck out 10 times. Their only run came on a Wilyer Abreu (2-for-3) solo blast in the fourth inning that originally gave the team a 1-0 lead. Ceddanne Rafaela (2-for-3) was the only player in the lineup to record multiple hits.
The Red Sox's pitchers were fine, as Nick Pivetta got the start and went five innings, giving up three runs on just three hits (two home runs) and a walk while striking out six. Bailey Horn allowed one run on two hits in 1/3 of an inning. Chase Shugart pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out two batters.
This loss drops Boston to 63-57 overall and 34-25 on the road. This is also their second loss in a row. The two teams will meet again on Friday.
