The Boston Red Sox haven't been a dominant team so far in the 2024 season, winning 28 of their first 55 games.
However, one pitcher has continued to shine in his second season with the club - Brennan Bernardino.
On Tuesday, Bernardino entered a one-run game in the sixth inning against the Baltimore Orioles with two men on and no outs. After walking his first batter, he escaped the bases-loaded jam without allowing a single runner to cross home plate. This impressive outing helped the Red Sox beat the Orioles for the first time this season.
Wednesday's starter, Brayan Bello, shared his appreciation for the reliever after his performance.
“The whole time I was yelling at him from the dugout because he was doing such a great job,” Bello said through translator Daveson Pérez (via. MassLive). “I had to give him his hug and his kiss for the incredible job that he did out there.”
These situations are nothing new to 32-year-old lefty, as the last 33 batters that he's faced with runners in scoring position have gone 0-for-27 with five walks and a sacrifice fly.
Despite a strange decision that led to him starting the year in Triple-A, Bernardino has been nails. On the year, he appeared in 20 games and has recorded a 0.78 ERA and a 0.826 WHIP, bringing his career numbers with Boston down to a 2.44 ERA and a 1.154 WHIP in 75 games.
He deserves all of the respect in the world for how he handled being sent to Worcester and how he's dominated since returning to the big-league roster.
