At the MLB trade deadline just over a month ago, the Boston Red Sox made a number of moves, but they added just one position player to their roster.
Boston acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays for a package that included the trio of Gilberto Batista, Cutter Coffey and Eddinson Paulino.
At the time, the trade wasn't seen as a necessary one because the Red Sox had Connor Wong (who had been raking at the time) and Reese McGuire (who was hot to start the year).
Since then, the trade has looked even more pointless, as Jansen has hit just .207 with a .592 OPS, two home runs and five RBIs.
Earlier this week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke about the catcher's offensive struggles at the plate.
"He’s mishitting balls, not finishing at-bats," Cora said (via. The Boston Globe). "It's part of the grind, man. Right now, we're grinding as an offense. Jarren (Duran) is the only one that's consistent along with (Wilyer) Abreu. But besides that, right now as an offense, we're not doing those things."
Cora's not wrong. The offense has looked dreadful. They've scored just eight runs in their five-game losing streak, and just 13 runs in their last seven matchups.
That's not the way to win baseball games and get into the postseason, and if they keep hitting like this, they'll continue to fall in the standings and eliminate themselves from playoff contention.
