The New York Yankees reinstated relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle from the 15-day injured list, the team announced Wednesday.
A move that was expected after manager Aaron Boone said as much earlier in the week, the Yankees get some much-needed bullpen help in the middle of a four-game series with the Seattle Mariners.
Kahnle has been working his way back since dealing with shoulder inflammation during spring training. His rehab was slowed a bit during the month of April, but he's had no issues during his rehab assignment over the last two weeks.
Kahnle's addition to the bullpen is much needed. Though the Yankees still sport the best staff ERA (2.92) and second-best bullpen ERA (2.84) in MLB, their strikeout rate has been concerningly low.
As Clay Holmes continues his role as the closer, Kahnle is likely to slot in as the set up man, potentially splitting those duties with Luke Weaver, who has enjoyed a strong start to the season with a 2.20 ERA in 28.2 innings pitched.
In a corresponding move, the Yankees optioned left-handed pitcher Clayton Andrews to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Tuesday night's loss.
