New York Yankees relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle is nearing the end of his rehab assignment and could return to the team this week while Gerrit Cole and DJ LeMahieu continue to work their way back from injuries.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters before Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox that Kahnle could be activated Wednesday.

Here are a few notes on some Yankees injuries updates:

Yankees injury updates: Tommy Kahnle, DJ LeMahieu, Gerrit Cole

Tommy Kahnle could return Wednesday

Kahnle has been working his way back since dealing with shoulder inflammation during spring training. His rehab was slowed a bit during the month of April, but he's been in the middle of a rehab assignment over the last two weeks.

Boone said Kahnle will probably be activated Wednesday, which is the third of a four-game series at home against the Seattle Mariners.

DJ LeMahieu progressing

The Yankees veteran infielder continues to work his way back from a non-displaced foot fracture he suffered in spring training when he fouled a ball off his right foot. He suffered a setback in his first rehab game but started a second rehab stint this week in Double-A Somerset.

Boone told reporters that LeMahieu is playing in his second rehab game Sunday and then could go back to back games Tuesday and Wednesday before potentially playing in three straight games over the weekend.

Gerrit Cole's next step

Boone didn't provide an update on Cole before Sunday's game, but the Yankees ace threw a bullpen Saturday morning. The next step for Cole is to throw a live bullpen against hitters in batting practice, which could happen early during the upcoming week.
