The San Francisco Giants have been unable to land a prized free agent on a long-term deal in recent offseasons. They tried for Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, and Shohei Ohtani and came up short each time.
This coming offseason, they are expected to be very active. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report even listed them as one of eight teams he expects to spend money in free agency.
Miller also included a veteran slugger and division rival as somebody they could target.
"It has been suggested that the Giants might be in on Juan Soto, but we'll believe it when we see it, given their high-profile free agency misses in recent years," Miller wrote. "But they could spend a lot of money on an Anthony Santander, Teoscar Hernandez and/or Ha-Seong Kim."
Hernandez would certainly be an interesting addition for the Giants. If San Francisco signs him, they could put a dagger in the hearts of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran slugger is hitting .266 with 28 home runs, 87 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and an .819 OPS.
Of course, Hernandez is no Soto, but he likely will receive a long-term deal this winter and he could be a perfect fit in San Francisco as they try to build a contending team for 2025 and beyond.
It's about time that the Giants were able to land a top-level free agent, and Hernandez could be one of a few they could target to try and bounce back into contention.
We'll see how the offseason plays out for the Giants and if they pursue Hernandez this winter.
