The San Francisco Giants are likely to miss the 2024 postseason after their recent slide took them to three games below the .500 mark.
At 69-72, they are now 7 1/2 games back of the final National League Wild Card spot. Though they re-signed Matt Chapman to a six-year contract extension, they may need a little more offensive help in the offseason.
When projecting their Opening Day lineup for 2025, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report included veteran slugger J.D. Martinez.
"The Giants have struggled to reel in their top targets in free agency in recent years, but they look like a great fit for second baseman Gleyber Torres if the Yankees decide to move on from him this winter," Reuter wrote. "A veteran run-producer like J.D. Martinez could also help solidify the middle of the lineup."
Martinez would certainly be a good fit for the Giants. The 37-year-old has had a strong 2024 season with the New York Mets.
In 381 at-bats, Martinez is hitting .252 with 16 home runs, 65 RBI, and a .777 OPS this season.
He'll likely be a strong candidate for a one-year deal this coming offseason, as he has signed such deals in each of the past two winters. He also shouldn't come at too high of a price for the Giants, who have yet to reach the postseason since 2021.
As Reuter alluded to, the Giants missed out on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa in the 2022-23 offseason and also fell short in the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes last winter. Martinez would qualify as a high-profile target for San Francisco.
Martinez will be one of the most sought-after bats this offseason. It will be interesting to see if the Giants are one of the teams that is in on him.
