The St. Louis Cardinals are going to have some holes to fill in the offseason. They'll need a starting pitcher to bolster their rotation.
Both Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson could ultimately be gone, as they have club options for 2025 that may not be picked up. This will leave a hole in their rotation.
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery has struggled with the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, though he does have a player option for 2025 that he could potentially decline.
In the event that he does decline it, the Cardinals could take a chance on him.
Montgomery spent parts of two seasons with the Cardinals. He was acquired from the New York Yankees at the trade deadline in 2022, only to be traded to the Texas Rangers the following year.
Last October, Montgomery played a key role in the Rangers winning their first World Series title.
If he does indeed opt out of his contract, he likely won't be quite as expensive as other starters, and that could put him within the Cardinals preferred price range.
The 31-year-old is 8-7 in 24 starts with a 6.23 ERA, but his struggles can largely be attributed to the fact that he did not sign until the end of spring training.
It's also possible that Montgomery will exercise his player option and remain in Arizona. But if he decides to opt out, St. Louis could be a good fit for him as he tries to rebuild his stock.
