The St. Louis Cardinals are inching closer to being officially eliminated from postseason contention for the second consecutive year. A lackluster offense and aging starting rotation have been the main culprits for their struggles this year.
Concerning the rotation, the Cardinals might have some spots to fill, as both Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn's club options could be declined. One of those spots could be filled by former fan-favorite Michael Wacha.
Nate Hagerty of Sports Illustrated noted that it might make sense for St. Louis to bring him back.
Wacha has an opt-out clause in his contract with the Kansas City Royals that he is expected to exercise this winter. If Gibson and Lynn's club options are declined, then it would make sense for the Cardinals to pursue a reunion with Wacha.
The 33-year-old broke into the Major Leagues in 2013 and earned NLCS MVP honors for St. Louis. He was an All-Star in 2015 and had some truly memorable moments as a Cardinal.
While not necessarily an ace, Wacha seems to have put his injury struggles behind him and is somebody that could give the Cardinals quality innings if signed. He could be an ideal candidate to serve as the No. 2 starter behind Sonny Gray.
In 27 starts, Wacha is 13-7 with a 3.29 ERA with the Royals this season. He likely won't be too expensive, especially if the Cardinals decline the options for Gibson and Lynn.
His market will be competitive, but his ties to St. Louis could give the Cardinals an advantage in the possible sweepstakes. We'll see if St. Louis decides to pursue him.
