The New York Yankees are looking to take the lead in the American League Division Series on Wednesday night.
After splitting the first two games against the Kansas City Royals in The Bronx, the series now takes place in Kansas City for Games 3 and 4 on consecutive days.
The Yankees are turning to Clarke Schmidt on the mound for Game 3 with Gerrit Cole slated to pitch in Game 4 against Michael Wacha — a rematch of the series opener.
Schmidt was named the starter over rookie Luis Gil, who likely could get some early run out of the bullpen.
Schmidt was in the middle of a breakout season before suffering a lat strain in his throwing arm at the end of May.
In 11 starts across 60.2 innings pitched, Schmidt had a 5-3 record with a 2.52 ERA to begin the season. After he came back from the injured list in September, he had a 3.65 ERA in five starts.
The Yankees starting lineup will go against Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (16-9, 3.00), who had two starts against New York this season.
In hopes of finding a winning formula, the Yankees are going back to the lineup they used in Game 1 with Oswaldo Cabrera at first base — despite Jon Berti's solid at-bats in Game 2.
