New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is inching closer to his MLB return as he is set to make his second rehab start Sunday.

After getting on the mound earlier in the week for his first rehab stint in Double-A, Cole dazzled in 3.1 innings pitched for the Somerset Patriots.

UPDATE: How Yankees ace Gerrit Cole pitched in second rehab start

Now, Cole is set to begin his second rehab start in Double-A again Sunday. It's expected there will be a slight increase in pitch count between 55-60 pitches. Cole threw 45 pitches during his first rehab assignment.

It isn't clear how many more rehab outings Cole will need before he comes back. It will be a collective decision between Cole and the team doctors.

Manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week that Cole will make “at least a few” more minor league appearances before he's brought back to the active roster to make his debut.

Despite their recent woes against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend, the Yankees hold the best record in the American League and the second-best record in MLB.
