The Chicago Cubs are struggling to stay afloat in the National League Wild Card race, and bullpen additions are in order.
While Chicago’s lineup is undoubtedly in need of reinforcements, it’s the Cubs ‘pen that has been most frustrating this season. Monday’s loss to the San Francisco Giants was a prime example. Chicago received 7 1/3 innings of magnificent work from starter Justin Steele and led 4-2 needing just five more outs. The bullpen spoiled Steele’s masterclass, however, collectively allowing three earned runs while tallying only four outs in the 5-4 loss.
Chicago isn’t finding bullpen answers within its clubhouse, and the time has come to make a trade.
Luckily for the Cubs, there are quality relievers on the market, including some whose availability might surprise. Jim Bowden, senior writer for The Athletic, reported on Wednesday that the Boston Red Sox could be looking to deal reliever Kenley Jansen, who has excelled this season.
“If the season ended today, the Red Sox would make the playoffs as the American League’s third wild-card team, which makes it hard for me to believe they would trade their closer at the deadline,” Bowden said. “However, rival execs reminded me there could be several “buyer-to-buyer” type trades this year and that Jansen could be expendable in the right swap. Jansen has logged a 2.30 ERA in 27 appearances this year with 15 saves in 16 opportunities. He’s an impending free agent.”
The Cubs still lack a bona fide closer, making them a perfect fit for Jansen. Will Chicago's president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer make the call to Boston?
