In an urgent search for more offense, the Chicago Cubs could soon call the Toronto Blue Jays about Toronto’s three-time All-Star.
Chicago (37-42) has struggled to produce runs this season. President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer must be looking to deal for a powerful bat, with the Cubs linked to both Elias Díaz and Alex Bregman in the past week.
Now, it appears that another star slugger could be available for Chicago to make a deal for before the deadline, according to The Athletic’s Levi Weaver.
Weaver reported on Tuesday that Toronto could be looking to trade Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as the Blue Jays find themselves falling out of playoff contention.
“Toronto … keeps slipping further and further into a failed season, at 35-43 -- 7 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot,” Weaver said. “Would they part ways with Guerrero? (Cubs take note: He can still play third base.)”
“The Cubs could use an impact bat, and it wouldn’t hurt if it were someone who could play a little third base or catcher,” Weaver added.
Guerrero Jr.’s explosive bat would be a perfect addition to Chicago’s offense, which currently ranks No. 21 in Major League Baseball in slugging percentage (.370).
Will Jed Hoyer get on the phone with Toronto and make a deal?
