The Boston Red Sox are set to have a number of players hit free agency once postseason baseball ends and a World Series is crowned.

This week, Boston's list of pending free agents grew by one, as catcher Reese McGuire opted to hit the market.

The Red Sox originally acquired McGuire and relief pitcher Taylor Broadway from the Chicago White Sox for reliever Jake Diekman in 2022.

In three seasons with Boston, the 29-year-old hit .265 with a .686 OPS, seven home runs and 46 RBIs. In 2024, he appeared in 53 games, hitting .209 with a .575 OPS and three home runs.

2024 was an interesting year for McGuire, as he was involved in a benches-clearing altercation with the Colorado Rockies back in July. Not long after, Boston acquired Danny Jansen in a trade from the Blue Jays and designated McGuire for assignment.

McGuire said he was caught off guard by the move and clearly took it personally. With that and the fact that Boston has Connor Wong and Kyle Teel as their catchers for 2025, it's not surprising that McGuire didn't want to remain in the organization.
