Emotional Red Sox pitcher reflects on time in Boston before hitting free agency image

Four years ago, the Boston Red Sox sent relievers Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree along with cash considerations to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Connor Seabold and Nick Pivetta.

While Seabold flamed out in the MLB and is now pitching in the KBO, Pivetta stuck around and made an impact with the Red Sox over the last five seasons.

In 131 games, he's posted a 4.29 ERA and a 1.243 WHIP while striking out 10.2 batters per nine innings. In 2024, he tossed 145 2/3 innings over 27 outings (26 starts), recording a 4.14 ERA and a 1.126 WHIP while striking 10.6 batters per nine innings.

Now, with Boston's 2024 season in the rearview, Pivetta's set to the hit market, meaning his time as a Red Sox could be over.

After his final start, the emotional 31-year-old reflected on his time with the team.

"I think [my emotions] were pretty strong and pretty consistent throughout the day. A lot of memories. A lot to be grateful for," Pivetta said. "It's my last start, so far, for me being a Red Sox. It's been a hefty four years, almost five years, for me. There's a lot, like I said, to be grateful for—a lot of opportunities to be given. I try to take advantage of every single one of those, but also I've had a lot of help along the way, and there's been a lot of people around who have helped guide me, and a lot of them are in the dugout and have been in the dugout and a lot of them are the coaching staff, so it's really emotional for me.

"I don't think it's a single moment. I think it's just the accumulation of it all. There are not too many moments where you get given an opportunity like I have to be with a really great organization like the Red Sox. I'm very lucky, and I'm very grateful for that."

Is Pivetta hopeful to return to the Red Sox in 2025?

"Of course, as always," Pivetta said. "Boston has become quite the home for me and my wife Kristen. We really enjoy it here. We've become very comfortable. Of course, that will always be on my mind."

Boston will be looking to add pitching this offseason, but if the right guys aren't available at their price (either through free agency or trade) Pivetta could find himself back in a Red Sox jersey again.
