Craig Breslow gives interesting insight when reflecting on first Red Sox trade deadline image

Earlier this year, the Boston Red Sox made five trades at the deadline to acquire a number of players who they hoped would help the team in 2024.

In total, Boston acquired James Paxton, Lucas Sims, Luis Garcia, Danny Jansen and Quinn Priester for a large package of prospects.

Paxton suffered a season-ending injury soon after the trade, Sims and Garcia were horrible out of the bullpen and Jansen was a dud offensively. Priester made just one start, but he's still young and under team control for a while.

After the season, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has mixed feelings about his first trade deadline running the team.

"Our deadline, obviously, from a results standpoint didn't end up the way we had hoped. We had untimely injuries. The performances weren't what we had expected. That's part of the gig here," Breslow said on "Baseball Isn't Boring" with Rob Bradford. "From the perspective of process, I think we did a good job. We identified very clear needs. We entered the trade deadline with a punch list, and we executed on that.

"I think we got two relievers that came with track records of success. We got a left-handed starter. We got a right-handed bat that we felt could both strengthen the catching core and also would play well at Fenway, giving Danny's profile for pulling the ball in the air. And, then, lastly, we operated from a position of depth in trading Nick (Yorke), primarily a second baseman and that's a position in this organization that we really feel good about for kind of a similar prospect pedigreed starting pitcher in Quinn.

"I think from the standpoint of walking out of the room as the clock struck 6:00 on deadline day, we felt pretty good about what we were able to accomplish... I also recognized that our performance, my performance at the trade deadline is going to be measured by what happens over the two months that we have these players. That didn't go as well as we hoped."

Breslow and company did see the team's biggest flaws and tried to get them some help. It wasn't the positions he attacked, it was the guys that he brought in.

There were better players who moved at the deadline that moved who could've helped the Red Sox make a run at the postseason, but he's right in the sense that they were looking at the right places.
