Nobody thought the Boston Red Sox were a playoff team when the 2024 season started, and they were right. However, at points throughout the year, the team that finished 81-81, looked like they were one of the better teams in baseball.
Reaching double-digit games above .500, Boston came crashing down after the All-Star break in what seems to be an annual tradition. A combination of injuries and dramatic drop-offs from some of their key contributors hurt the club in the end.
As the team prepares for the 2025 season, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy recently appeared on the "Fenway Rundown" podcast and provided the areas that they'll need to address in the offseason to become contenders.
“We have three emerging starters in our rotation with Kutter (Crawford), Brayan (Bello) and Tanner (Houck). Those guys all made 30 starts,” Kennedy said. “We were thin. We need pitching. We need starting pitching. We need bullpen help. We need to shore up our infield defense. So we have a lot of work to do. But we know Brez knows the task at hand. Him and Alex (Cora) and the whole team are going to be focused in those areas.”
Kennedy clearly sees the issues, as these would've been the three areas that most fans and pundits would've pointed to.
The Red Sox should have plenty of money to spend and players/prospects to trade if they want to get talent through either free agency or a trade.
