The Atlanta Braves are used to having an explosive lineup. But in 2024, the offense has often struggled to materialize.
Injuries have played a role, most notably the loss of defending National League MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. But several everyday contributors have also played below their expectations, and one might be fighting to keep his job security.
Orlando Arcia, who was slated to be the Braves' everyday shortstop after an All-Star campaign in 2023, has struggled mightily at the plate. Meanwhile, one Major League Baseball insider says Atlanta could trade for a versatile infielder having a great 2024 season.
According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, the Braves are one of three potential trade fits for the Los Angeles Angels' Luis Rengifo, who has played mostly third base for the Halos this season.
"(Rengifo) is among the most versatile players who figure to be available this summer," Feinsand said. "The 27-year-old switch-hitter has started 30 games at third base and 21 at second this season, along with one at shortstop... (and) is an ideal candidate for a club seeking infield help."
Rengifo has a .306 batting average in 60 games, which would rank 7th in MLB if he had enough at-bats to qualify. His .353 on-base percentage and 117 OPS+ are also career-highs.
Meanwhile, Arcia is hitting just .212 with a dismal .244 on-base percentage. His .586 OPS is the fifth-worst among 149 qualified hitters and he's currently mired in a 1-for-24 slump.
According to The Athletic's David O'Brien, Arcia has "built up such goodwill" with the Braves for his defense and overall track record that he isn't in danger of losing his starting spot. But much of that is due to the lack of big-league-ready shortstop options in the minor leagues.
If the Braves were to trade for a major leaguer with significant shortstop experience, even the likes of Rengifo, who hasn't played the position much this season but has in the past, it could spell trouble for Arcia's future as the starter. But for now, the Braves appear to be in no rush to replace him.
