India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid stepped down from his post following India's emphatic T20 World Cup triumph in Barbados. The Men in Blue defeated South Africa in a thriller to lift the World T20 title after 17 years.

Dravid got the farewell he deserved after that heartbreaking loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup Final 2023. The ghosts of the past have now been vanquished and it's time to look forward towards a brighter future for the Indian cricket team.

The question of who replaces Dravid is a very natural question to arise. Former Indian opener and IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor, Gautam Gambhir has been long speculated to take over the reins from Dravid by the BCCI. Gambhir hasn’t shied away from expressing his excitement over the opportunity to coach the Indian team either.

Gambhir is the most likely candidate to take over, barring any last minute surprises from the BCCI.

When will Gambhir be announced as the head coach?

Following the World Cup success, the Indian team will now be travelling to Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series. A lot of youngsters will be getting an opportunity to prove their worth in the Indian team. Only three players from the World Cup squad will be featuring in the Zimbabwe tour, that too for the last three games.

BCCI secretary, Jay Shah recently confirmed that National Cricket Academy (NCA) director, VVS Laxman will be leading the team as the interim coach for now, but the new head coach will be announced soon and will be joining in for the Sri Lanka tour which kick starts on July 27, 2024.

CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names and after reaching Mumbai whatever they have decided we will go by that. VVS Laxman will be leading the team for the Zimbabwe tour but a new head coach will join from the Sri Lanka series

The other candidate apart from Gambhir that has been shortlisted is WV Raman who has led the Indian Women’s cricket team as head coach in the past. Despite his experience it is highly likely that Gambhir will be declared as the new coach of the Indian team.
