In response to criticism surrounding the recent washouts at the Green Park Stadium, BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla staunchly defended the venue, emphasizing its rich history and ongoing efforts to improve its facilities.
Following the abandonment of play on the second and third days of the Test match between India and Bangladesh, Shukla assured that plans are in place to address the drainage issues at this iconic stadium.

What steps are being taken to improve Green Park Stadium?
Upon his arrival in Kanpur, Shukla engaged in discussions with state government officials regarding the future of Green Park.
“I had a discussion with the officials of the state government and we discussed the road ahead. Hopefully, we can get things sorted soon,” he stated.
"This is an old ground and was among the five permanent Test centres. This is the first time in 80 years that we could not have any play for two days. But as history suggests, no match has been abandoned here,” he added.
Why was there no play despite the weather?
The BCCI vice president attributed the lack of play to the extreme weather rather than solely to the ageing infrastructure.
"It’s just that due to so much rain, there was a bit of dampness. But such a thing like this had never happened in Green Park, and this time, we suffered," he explained.
Shukla acknowledged the need for technological advancements in drainage systems, mentioning that modern facilities in Lucknow serve as examples for potential upgrades at Green Park.

"We have a modern stadium in Lucknow and are also building a stadium in Varanasi with hi-tech, modern technology. Here, too, we are having conversations with the authorities in terms of developing a system to soak the rainwater immediately,
