GautamGambhir - Cropped

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has emerged as a leading candidate in BCCI's quest for the next Team India head coach. The former India international, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo, has been approached by the BCCI to take the helm after Rahul Dravid.

Dravid's tenure is set to expire in June, after the 2024 T20 World Cup. It is confirmed that the coaching position will be held in power for over three years, from June 2024, to December 2027. As a replacement to Dravid, the BCCI has approached Gautam Gambhir on its own, despite rolling out a google form to the general public.

As the clock ticks towards the final assignment for Rahul Dravid, the fans brace themselves for yet another era of refined aims and ambitions. The Sporting News takes a look at the coaching record of the frontrunner for India's Head Coaching role, Gautam Gambhir.

What is Gautam Gambhir's past experience as a coach?

Gautam Gambhir's emergence as the leading candidate for Team India's Head Coach role, is down to the Indian Premier League. As astonishing as it may sound, the Delhi-born cricketer has no coaching experience at the domestic or international levels, barring the IPL.

Gambhir started his coaching journey (sort of as he was technically the team mentor) in 2022, with the then newly-formed Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). He worked with the Sanjiv Goenka-owned franchise, for two seasons (2022 and 2023). LSG qualified for the IPL knockout rounds for both seasons. In Gambhir's absence, LSG have been backpedaling in IPL 2024, and would most-likely fail to make it out of the group stage.

Gambhir's current stint, also happens to be his most eye-catching coaching job (though technically, he's a mentor with Chandrakant Pandit the coach). Ahead of IPL 2024, Gautam Gambhir marked a homecoming, with Kolkata Knight Riders. Joining the two-time champions as the mentor, Gambhir has been in the knick of things for the IPL 2024 league-leaders.
