The ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has captured the attention of Indian fans, with the tournament hotting up as the race for the playoffs comes to a tense end. There will be no respite from cricketing action after this season either, as the T20 World Cup starts just five days after the final.

However, looking beyond the global tournament, the future of the Indian national team is at a crossroads. Current coach Rahul Dravid is set to step down after his tenure ends in June, and the BCCI invited applications for the role from May 13.

Will Gautam Gambhir become India's head coach? BCCI reportedly set sights on KKR mentor as Rahul Dravid's replacement

There are several contenders for the role, including India great VVS Laxman and former Australia coach Justin Langer. On May 17 however, another name popped up in the running; former India opener Gautam Gambhir.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the former opener is the BCCI's top choice for the vacancy. The report mentions that the board has contacted Gambhir to learn of his interest, as they are reported to have done with Stephen Fleming as well.

Gambhir is currently the mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, who are on top of the IPL 2024 table. His stint as captain of the side brought them two trophies, while his previous two years at Lucknow Super Giants led to consecutive playoff qualifications. As a player, Gambhir won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011, scoring 97 in the final of the latter.

The BCCI has invited applications for the post, which closes on May 27, just one day after the IPL final. It remains to be seen whether Gambhir would be interested in the post.
