What led to Aleem Dar's appointment?

Dar’s appointment to the selection committee was announced shortly after Pakistan’s crushing defeat to England by an innings and 47 runs, despite scoring over 500 runs in the first innings of the Test.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responded by revamping the selection committee, adding Aleem Dar, former cricketers Aaqib Javed and Azhar Ali, and sports analyst Hassan Cheema to the panel.

This new selection committee's first challenge will be picking the squad for the upcoming Tests against England and later for the white-ball series in Australia and South Africa.

Dar's inclusion marks a significant shift as it's the first time a former umpire has been entrusted with such responsibility in cricket.

Why is Aleem Dar's appointment significant?

Aleem Dar’s appointment is particularly notable as he is the first former umpire to be given a selector role. The 56-year-old retired from international umpiring earlier in 2024, bringing an illustrious career to an end.

Dar has officiated in 448 international matches, including 145 Tests, 210 ODIs, and 72 T20Is, and was a distinguished member of the ICC Elite Panel for 19 years.

His achievements as an umpire are well-known, having won the prestigious David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year three times in a row from 2009 to 2011. Dar was also part of some of cricket’s biggest moments, including officiating the 2011 World Cup final.
