Scotland's players have the chance to do what none of their countrymen have done before when they bid for a first-ever passage to the knockout stage of a major international tournament against Hungary at Euro 2024 on Sunday.

In 12 previous appearances at World Cups and European Championships, Scotland have never made it out of their group, but history beckons for Steve Clarke's class of 2024.

A 5-1 thumping in their opening Group A encounter against hosts Germany on June 14 had echoes of previous major-stage collapses for the Scots, and few people would have backed them to still be in the fight come the final group game after that performance.

But a battling 1-1 draw against Switzerland, in which they took the lead through Scott McTominay only for Xherdan Shaqiri's wondergoal to peg them back, has left the pool finely poised heading into Matchday 3.

Germany are already through, but behind them the race is still on between Switzerland and the Scots, while Hungary know that only victory will be enough to give them any chance at all of qualifying as one of the best third-placed sides.

With the final group games being played simultaneously to ensure sporting integrity, it promises to be a nervy 90 minutes. Here's how you can watch all the action unfold in some of the world's major regions.

Scotland vs. Hungary lineups, team news

Scotland's defensive options were dealt a further blow with the news that Kieran Tierney has been ruled out of the tournament with a hamstring injury that forced him off against Switzerland. The Arsenal man flew home from Germany on Thursday. Scott McKenna is likely to deputise in a back five.

Ryan Porteous remains suspended following his red card in the opening defeat against Germany, although he would be available if Scotland were to make the knockout stages. Billy Gilmour should keep his place in midfield.

Scotland projected starting lineup (3-4-1-2, right to left): Gunn (GK) — Hendry, Hanley, McKenna —  Ralston, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson — McTominay — Adams, McGinn.

For Hungary, coach Marco Rossi knows that his team must go all out to attack against the Scots, and he could make changes to offer more forward threat.

Martin Adam looks the most likely to be given a chance from the start if Rossi does opt for changes, while there may also be reason to throw caution to the wind with Bendeguz Bolla again deployed in a right wing-back role in what could be an intriguing matchup with Scotland captain Andrew Robertson.

Hungary projected starting lineup (3-4-1-2, right to left): Gulacsi (GK) — Fiola, Orban, Dardai — Bolla, Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez — Szoboszlai — Adam, Varga.

Scotland vs. Hungary prediction

  • Score prediction: Scotland 1-1 Hungary

With so much on the line, these two sides know that victory is vital but in the end there is a chance that the tension ends up stifling them both. Don't be surprised if this one ends in a stalemate, and both teams are left to reflect on what might have been.
