'Why he's the captain': Gutherson's secret injury battle revealed image

The Eels have dodged the wooden spoon for 2024, demolishing the Tigers in the 'Spoon Bowl' on Friday night 60-26.

Parramatta ran in 11 tries in a match they largely controlled from kickoff.

While it is not the season they would have hoped for, it was a relatively positive end to the 2024 campaign.

Post-match, Clint Gutherson's efforts to ensure the club finished the campaign strongly were revealed.

Interim head coach Trent Barrett shared that the Eels fullback had been playing the last three weeks with three broken ribs and a torn quad.

Kelma Tuilagi also lined up against the Tigers with a broken hand.

"A lot of people don't see that, and if the club didn't mean enough to them, they wouldn't have turned up and played," Barrett said.

"Credit to them.

"As for Gutho, that's why he's the captain."

When asked if he considered not playing during those three weeks, Gutherson had a simple response.

"No way."

The Eels captain then praised his interim coach, who he believes has been key in keeping player morale up.

"[I wanted to play because of] the team, the club, Baz (Trent Barrett).

"This year's gone south pretty quickly, but Baz and the coaching staff ... they've kept us together.

"I think it's shown in our performances. We've turned up, ready to go."
