How the boring Bulldogs became an attacking force in NRL premiership race image

Back in July after the 20-18 loss to the Cowboys, it looked like the Bulldogs lacked the firepower to be an NRL premiership contender.

The previous five weeks had seen the team fail to score more than 20 points in a game and their defence had earned them victory in three of those five games.

But the recent five-week period has seen a devastating modification to the Bulldogs attack which has seen them average 31 points across five consecutive wins.

Half-back Toby Sexton revealed a meeting organised by coach Cameron Ciraldo was the catalyst for their recent high-scoring performances.

"About five weeks ago we had some conversations around our attack," Sexton said.

"It wasn't where we needed it to be. That was because we'd focused on our defence, and rightly so given the way we defended last year.

"But we knew if we were going to go to the next stage in this competition, then our attack needed to improve. Slowly we've improved it and started to score a few more points."

Sexton revealed that it was initially tough for the players to get used to Ciraldo's defensive approach regarding their attacking game.

"It's taken a little while for the boys to understand the way he does things and what's expected," Sexton said. "The boys are buying in at the moment.

"He gives you every chance to play well on the weekend with the level of detail he goes into in regard to opposition defences and how we can pick them part. It's a relationship I'm keen to keep building."

Not only have the Bulldogs been exciting in attack but they have continued to be miserly in defence.

The Bulldogs have not conceded a point in the second-half of their last three matches and statistically have the best defence in the competition.

With top four still in their sights, the Bulldogs will face Manly in a top-eight blockbuster on Friday night.
