There is no denying that Aussie Rules is one of the most physically demanding sports on the planet, with players covering serious ground over four intense quarters.

The Sporting News takes you through the key timings for an AFL game.

How long does an AFL game go for?

Generally speaking, an AFL match will run for just under three hours from start to finish.

A game comprises four quarters, which are made up of 20 minutes of actual game time.

However, 'time-on' is added for any stoppages, such as injuries or throw-ins.

This means each quarter typically lasts for 25 to 30 minutes.

In between each quarter, there is a six minute break, while players are given 20 minutes to recover at half time.

The premier women's Aussie Rules competition has shorter match lengths, with quarters set at 17 minutes.

Factoring in stoppages and breaks, 68 minutes of actual game time is usually completed in less than two hours.
