The 2024 AFL home-and-away season came to a thrilling end, with eight teams able to extend their campaigns.

That number has now been cut in half as the finals heat up.

Here's what to know about the 2024 AFL finals, with the preliminary finals up next:

AFL Finals schedule, dates

The top eight teams had a week off before the first set of finals games began on Thursday, September 5.

Eventually, the season will conclude with the Grand Final on Saturday, September 28.

AFL Finals system

Since 2000, the AFL has used the same structure for the finals season, with the top eight further broken down into two groups of four.

In this system, those higher-placed teams are given a "double chance" should they lose in the first week of the finals.
