The weekly show, which has aired on USA Network since January 2016, was looking for a long-term home for the first time since its original run on UPN, which lasted between the show's inception in 1999 and 2006. Since then, "SmackDown" has aired on The CW, MyNetworkTV, the SyFy Network and USA Network.
NBCUniversal was originally in negotiations to retain "SmackDown" but instead set its sights on the company's flagship show, WWE "RAW."
"RAW" has aired on USA Network since 2005, and a new deal was recently signed between WWE and NBCUniversal to keep the show on the USA Network for the foreseeable future.
The reports come on the back of the news that WWE stock prices are up 19.1 percent.
