Despite sitting four games under .500, the Indiana Fever (10-14) still have much to play for, as they currently sit third in the Eastern Conference and seventh overall in the WNBA standings. Although their record may be less than stellar, the rock-solid play of Caitlin Clark continues to impress as she chases Rookie of the Year honors.
The Fever held off a gritty Phoenix Mercury team 96-85 Friday night, which saw Indiana lead 81-58 after three quarters before a near-comeback from the Mercury was halted in the later stages of regulation. Clark also secured a franchise record for the Fever under 30 games into her young career and had seven first-quarter assists, finishing the night with 20 points and 13 assists.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx (16-7) remain atop the Western Conference as the No. 3 seed league-wide, having won nine out of their last 13 games, which included a six-game winning streak from June 9 to June 22.
In their last win in June, Minnesota took care of the WNBA's current No. 1 team, the New York Liberty, 94-89, which began a mixed bag of wins and losses. However, the Lynx have strung together wins in two of their last three games, including an 82-67 thrashing of the Los Angeles Sparks Tuesday night. Bridget Carleton's 16 points led the way in the win, along with Dorka Juhasz's 15 points. Kayla McBride added 11.
The Fever and Lynx have yet to play each other in 2024, as the weekend tilt will begin the first of three games between the pair, with their last game against each other taking place Friday, Sept. 6, in a potential playoff seeding game for both clubs.
Can Indiana set the tone early, or will Minnesota begin a new winning streak, rebound from a loss to Seattle, and salvage its two-game weekend schedule?
