The 2019 Wells Fargo Championship will tee off on Thursday, May 2, but it will be without a familiar face.
In a surprising charge to Tiger Woods' 2019 schedule, he announced he will not be participating in the tournament, holding off his PGA Tour return a little bit longer after his Masters victory. Woods won the tournament in 2007, when it was called the Wachovia Championship. With the Wells Fargo a no-go, Woods' next tournament is expected to be the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, which takes place two weeks later.
While Woods' absence will likely persist as the biggest story up until the day the tournament begins, the annual fanfare shouldn't diminish too much. Of course it helps that it's played at a well-recognized PGA course, Quail Hollow, which has a difficult final trio of holes that usually makes for exciting and sometimes unexpected finishes.

Jason Day will try to defend his 2018 victory, which is also his most recent PGA Tour win. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, the only golfer to win the Wells Fargo Championship multiple times, will try to rebound after his worst performance of the year at the Masters.

Who is in the Wells Fargo Championship field?
With Woods out of the picture, the field does lose a little bit of its luster. Only three of the top 10 golfers in the world — Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler — are currently slated to compete. Defending champion Jason Day will also be part of the field. Other prominent names include Tony Finau, Paul Casey and Patrick Reed, as well as past champions Brian Harman and J.B. Holmes.
