Vancouver Whitecaps defender Sheanon Williams was arrested Thursday morning and has been charged with assault in connection with an alleged domestic incident.
Major League Soccer announced Thursday that Williams has been suspended pending investigations by the league and the Vancouver Police Department. The 27-year-old will also undergo an assessment by MLS’ Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (“SABH”) Program.
"After the assessment is complete and Major League Soccer conducts its investigation, MLS will make a further determination concerning Williams’ status," the league said in a statement posted on its website.
The Boston native had previously played for the Philadelphia Union and Houston Dynamo prior to joining the Whitecaps ahead of the 2017 season. Williams has played in 11 regular season games this year for Vancouver, all starts.
The Williams news is another black eye for MLS, with TMZ having released video of Orlando City forward Cyle Larin being arrested for DUI on Thursday.
Vancouver is in action Saturday with a home match against FC Dallas.
