Jonathan Klinsmann has been named to the United States national team roster after Zack Steffen was forced to withdraw with injury, U.S. Soccer has announced.

Steffen was in action on Sunday for the Columbus Crew in the second leg of their Eastern Conference semifinal with the New York Red Bulls.

While Steffen went the distance in goal for the Crew in their 3-0 loss which saw them eliminated from the MLS playoffs, U.S. Soccer said in a statement he aggravated a right hamstring injury in the defeat.

The injury was originally picked up while on international duty with the USMNT against Colombia in October.

Klinsmann, son of the former USMNT manager and Germany legend Jurgen, has been named as a direct replacement.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has yet to make a first-team appearance in the Bundesliga for Hertha Berlin, with his lone senior start coming in the Europa League in 2017-18.

Previously, Klinsmann has been the No.1 for the U.S. at youth levels, including being the starter at the 2017 Under-20 World Cup, but has never been capped at the senior level.

He joins Atlanta United’s Brad Guzan and Club Brugge’s Ethan Horvath as the goalkeepers on the roster to face England and Italy.

Guzan’s Atlanta teammate, Darlington Nagbe, was also forced to withdraw from the USMNT squad due to a hamstring strain in the MLS side’s second-leg victory over New York City FC, which saw the Five Stripes progress to the Eastern Conference final.

No replacement for the midfielder was named, with the USMNT roster standing at 27 for the two friendlies.

The USMNT will face England at Wembley Stadium on November 15, while their game against Italy will take place in Belgium on November 20.
