Mondo Duplantis and Karsten Warholm are dominant figures in world athletics, the standard-bearers for their respective events dating back to the Tokyo Olympics.
Duplantis has won pole vault gold at the last two Olympics, breaking his world record spectacularly in Paris last month (then topping it by a quarter-inch three weeks later). Warholm won the 400m hurdles in Tokyo, and the world record he set three years ago still stands.
Both, then, are plenty familiar with standing atop podiums, but their competitiveness doesn't stop there. A bit of friendly banter at a Diamond League event last year has spawned a new challenge outside their areas of expertise: a one-off 100m sprint exhibition.
The story goes that Warholm complemented Duplantis on his speed during a training session leading up to last year's Monaco meet and the pole vaulter suggested they race head-to-head. Neither has run the 100m in competition in years -- Duplantis last ran the sprint as a Louisiana high school athlete in 2018, while Warholm's most recent 100m race came in January 2017.
